Looking for disc golf in Freeman, South Dakota? The Prairie Arboretum Disc Golf Course offers a unique round through one of southeast South Dakota’s most scenic public spaces.
Located at the Prairie Arboretum in Freeman, the course combines mature trees, open fairways, prairie areas, ponds, water carries and technical wooded shots in a setting unlike a typical city-park course.
The Prairie Arboretum currently features a 9-hole disc golf course, with plans underway to expand and develop the property into a full 18-hole destination course.
The future course is being designed to offer several levels of play, from approachable recreational tees to longer championship-level options.
Planned course features include:
Multiple tee locations for different skill levels
Three major water-carry holes
Technical wooded fairways
Protected prairie areas
Long open bomber holes
Risk-and-reward shot choices
An island-style finishing hole
Mature trees and arboretum collections throughout the course
Benches and improved tee areas
Course signage and navigation improvements
What makes disc golf in Freeman different is the setting.
The Prairie Arboretum covers roughly 40 acres and includes ponds, gardens, mature tree collections, bridges, prairie areas, an amphitheater, sculptures and other landscaped features.
Rather than playing around soccer fields and ordinary park spaces, much of the course winds directly through the Arboretum landscape.
Several holes are being designed specifically around these features, including water carries, narrow tree corridors and the course’s planned signature island finish.
Freeman is located in southeastern South Dakota and is an easy side trip for players traveling through the region.
The course can make a great stop for players traveling between larger destinations in South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa and Minnesota, including travelers using Interstate 90 and Interstate 29.
There is no need to be participating in an event or tournament. Visitors are welcome to come to Freeman specifically to play the course and explore the Arboretum.
Regular disc golf parking is available on the west side of the Prairie Arboretum near the course.
Players traveling with campers, motorhomes, trailers or other large vehicles have additional room available in the larger north parking area.
This makes the course particularly convenient for traveling players who may not want to maneuver a camper or large rig through a small parking lot.
Public restrooms are available at the Prairie Arboretum Visitor Center.
The expanded 18-hole layout is being designed so players travel near the Visitor Center during their round, providing convenient access to restrooms and other future player amenities.
The goal is to make the Prairie Arboretum Disc Golf Course more than simply another place to play nine holes.
The long-term vision is a memorable South Dakota disc golf destination — a course that gives players a reason to make Freeman part of their trip.
Whether you live nearby, are visiting Freeman, or are traveling across southeastern South Dakota looking for a new course to play, we invite you to experience disc golf at the Prairie Arboretum.
